Countries have changed their names, some from the names they were called during colonization’s, different geographical reasons spilt and merger of some countries and some just to give themselves some new identity. There is many more reason why a county can change its name. Here is a list of the six countries that changed there names and the reason behind it.
Republic of South Africa
South Africa was formerly known as the Union of South Africa. The union of South Africa was formed in May thirty-first nineteen ten. It was formed as a parliamentary union of the four self governing British colonies. The four self governing colonies are the cape of good hope province presently known as the cape province, the Natal province previously known as the Natal colony ,the Orange river colony presently known as orange free state province and the Transvaal province formerly known as the Transvaal colony. The union came to end in nineteen sixty one and the union of South Africa become Republic of South Africa.
Turkey was formerly known as the Ottoman Empire, which was established in northern Anatolia by Osman at the end of the 13 Th centuries. It was then expanded by his successor to include of Asia Minor and much of southern Europe. After few setbacks, the ottoman ruled up to 16th and 17th centuries and then it ended after the First World War, to become the present Turkey. (image by Nomadic Samuel ).
Iran was previously known as Persia. The ancient kingdom of Persian becomes the domain of the Achaemenid dynasty. Persia become the centre of power and overthrown in the 330 bc.The country was the conquered by the Muslims Arabs and renamed Iran in the nineteen thirty five.
Yemen was formerly known as the Yemen Arabs republic and it changed its name from the Yemen Arabs republic in 1990.
Guyana was formerly known as British Guiana and it was a British colony on the northern coast of South America, it become an n independent country and changed its name to Guyana. (image by Royaldds).
East germanyalso known as the Germany democratic republic, the former soviet influenced eastern part into two parts which divided Germany. The east and West Germany merged to bring out the present Germany.
Dutch Formosa and the Spanish Formosa were the previous names of the Taiwan. The Taiwan was colonized by both the colonial Dutch government and the Spanish colony, after independence the island Formosa changed its name to the present Taiwan.
Tanganyika territory was how Tanzania was formerly known; it united with the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba to become the present known republic of Tanzania. It was also part of the British East Africa.
Different countries change their names because of the different circumstances but the beauty of the county and the beauty of its people remain. Many countries have grown economically by changing their names and especially the countries that changed their names after the colonization and become and independent identity away from their colonizers. The merger of some countries and forming one sing name has helped countries to have a unique identity.
